Public water supply is another area where improvements are needed: estimates suggest that around one in four liters of drinkable water is lost to leaky pipes and evaporation.

A multi-faceted approach addressing these issues simultaneously is essential, according to the European Environmental Agency report. It highlights the need for sustained effort from governments, industries, and citizens alike – but the potential rewards are significant: saving hundreds of liters per person each day, reducing our carbon footprint, and protecting vulnerable communities. As we move forward into an uncertain climate future, one thing is certain: Europe’s drought conundrum can be solved – but it will take all of us working together to make it happen.
