The stakes are high: injuries sustained by passengers in non-standard seating positions – particularly those caused by seatbelts tightening around soft body parts rather than the bony pelvis – can have long-term consequences for mobility and quality of life. As we move toward a future where humans will increasingly surrender control to machines, it’s essential that our safety standards keep pace.
The industry is already taking notice, with companies like Zoox working to self-certify their vehicles while awaiting regulatory approval. However, this patchwork approach won’t suffice; a more comprehensive solution – one that prioritizes occupant safety above all else – is needed.
