In May 2025, President Erdogan announced the “Decade of Family and Population,” a national strategy aimed at reversing Turkey’s declining birthrate and promoting traditional conservative family values. However, this initiative has been used to suppress dissenting voices and curtail individual freedoms. The raids on LGBTQ+ organizations are a prime example.
Turkish authorities claim they are protecting families and children from “obscene content” and “LGBTQ+ propaganda.” But according to Yildiz Taghizade, director of Women for Women’s Human Rights (WWHR), the government is not just targeting the LGBTQ+ community but attempting to ban them from engaging in politics, claiming rights, and showing presence in public.

The Turkish Medical Association has condemned the raids as a violation of human rights, pointing out that treating gender identity and sexual orientation as crimes is unacceptable. Even some politicians have spoken out against the government’s actions. Erkan Bas, chairman of the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TIP), called for the immediate release of those arrested.
The EU has expressed concern over stigmatization and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals, which are antithetical to European values. Emma Sinclair-Webb, Turkey director at Human Rights Watch, sees the arrests as proof that the government is intent on criminalizing LGBTQ+ persons without enacting new laws.
As women’s organizations have pointed out, “Being LGBTQ+ is not a crime! Organizing as LGBTQ+ people is not a crime!” However, it remains to be seen whether this message will resonate with the Turkish government and its allies. The EU’s concern sends a clear signal: if Turkey continues down this path, it will face significant repercussions.
Turkey’s accession candidate status means it must uphold human rights and respect individual freedoms. The line between family values and repression is thinning, and it’s up to global leaders to speak out against this trend before it’s too late.
